When viewing documentaries, students need to think critically about them the same way they challenge a printed text. They need to be encouraged to wonder and ask the following questions:
- Who produced this clip and why?
- Whose viewpoint is the filmmaker representing and what techniques has he/she used to deliver the message? How do these techniques affect meaning?
- Whose viewpoint is missing?
- Is the "story" told from a first person's perspective or is there a narrator? How effective is that particular approach?
- Is it bias free? How do you know?
- How current is this clip and how do I determine it?
- If the clip has a soundtrack, how effective is it in creating a mood?
